What a historic, generational winter storm we just experienced here in Houston! My location received a total of 4.1" of snow for the entire storm, which began late 1/20/25 and ended midday 1/21/25. This storm total includes today's report of 2.4" plus yesterday's report of 1.7" of new snow. Amazing. Temperature this morning dropped to 21F here inside Houston's inner loop, which is also amazing. Wasn't as low as some had forecasted, especially with the snow pack, but still frigid. Regarding the snow, I took three core samples. I recorded the first core during yesterday's reporting time at 7am. I recorded the second core immediately after the snow stopped falling. I recorded the third core this morning at report time. First core (7am yday): 1.7", 0.33" SWE, 5-to-1 snow-to-water ratio. Second core (12pm yday): 4.0", 0.42" SWE, 9.5-to-1 snow-to-water ratio. Third core (7am today): 3.0", 0.32" SWE, 9.3-to-1 snow-to-water ratio. 100% of grassy areas remain covered with snow, so I did not reduce my snow depth measurement even though our driveway and sidewalks and roadway only have about 10% coverage. I disregarded those areas since we spent time clearing or walking those areas and sunlight late yesterday helped the melting process. This was a fun exercise for those of us who don't ever have a need to measure snow or snow pack. The training manuals and videos on the cocorahs website and youtube channel were extremely helpful!! |
