| Conditions are drier than usual for this time of year. We received 0.03” this week and the last two weeks. Temperatures have been normal with highs in the 70s and sunny most days. Soil moisture seems low and I’m having to water the garden due to lack of moisture which is unusual for April. Streamflows and water levels are lower than expected since we’ve not had any significant rain in more than two weeks. Plant and crop growth is still pretty good even with the lower than expected rainfall. Fire danger is moderate since there has been some significant wind. |

| No rain since the last report, and none in the forecast, so we may be nearing the end of rain for the rain year. But, we are over 43 inches, which should mean no problems with water supplies during the coming dry season. More blooming as the spring goes one. The native coastal irises are starting to open and more wild flowers are showing daily. The winter birds, like the Dark-eyed Juncos, have left for their summer breeding grounds and we are happy to see a pair of California Quail in our gardens--it's been at least a year since we've seen them. We've had some glorious sunny days and the past couple with morning fog. Ocean conditions are good for water sports and there are lots of ecotourists in town. And, families for the Easter weekend. |

| I inadvertently submitted this yesterday, so I'm resubmitting it today!
General: We're doing well for moisture: We have 121.63" of snow to date, with our 25 year long-term (uncalibrated) average being 109.02. This is really good news for our dryland farming. Fields are largely snow-free at this point, and creeks and springs are running. Agriculture: Again, great news from the moisture standpoint. Energy: Yesterday we created 55.36 kWHR and used 43.53 kWHR. We're consistently creating more than we use, even on cloudy days. Fire: Risk is increasing daily. Plants/wildlife: We're seeing a few more ducks, and several sandhill cranes. Red Wing Blackbirds are back, and we saw a marmot the other day on Buckskin! Water: We're in good shape! |

| Even though things are growing with the start of spring and plants waking up we are yet calling it Moderately Dry. Farmers working the fields are followed by storms of dust that is getting tossed into the air. Basically over the past couple of weeks we have only recorded just at .25 inch of rain. This coming week and actually starting now look to be promising to be a bit wetter. We shall see. The past three days were to be wet and we recorded little to nothing of any significance. |

| The past week only saw 0.12" of rain. This station 53% of NOAA monthly normal, and the low 70th percentile for both YTD and Water YTD. Grass is green but slow growing. A look at the garden found the topsoil dry and cracked, with low moisture a few inches down. Area farmers have begun some till work and the conditions were dusty as they turned up the soil. NWS is forecasting a healthy shot of rain today, but it seems like every time the chance comes, it seems to bypass this area. I certainly hope to not have to shift to Moderately Dry, but if this area does not see any real moisture soon, I believe that will become the case. |

| Occasional rain has been very light here and although creeks and the river are up the ground is pretty dry. Pasture and lawn are green but growing very slowing even with some quite warm days. Planting is underway and progressing well. This is very subjective and with fairly low confidence, but in the substantial prairie burn done a couple weeks ago, the new growth appears to be slower and less robust than we normally see. We could really use a good soaking rain. |

| Warmer weather last week has dried the garden soil enough to allow planting of peas and onion sets. Yesterday's very warm temperatures brought the spring peepers back to our pond along with a few tardy wood frogs. Grass is slowly turning green and daffodils continue to bloom profusely. In the woods, the first Spring Beauty and Purple Trillium flowers have opened. Trout Lily and Dutchman's Breeches have flower buds but no flowers yet. Marsh Marigolds are growing in swampy areas but have not yet flowered. Weeping willow trees are sprouting tiny green leaves and maple trees are budding. Turkeys continue gobbling and woodpeckers have started drumming to defend their territories. Woodcocks are performing their mating rituals at dawn and dusk and Red-winged Blackbirds flock to the cattails along the Hoosic River. Basset Brook and the Hoosic River flows have dropped from springtime highs. Vernal pools remain full. Hiking trails on Greylock have dried but remain muddy in normally wet sections. No black flies or mosquitoes yet but deer ticks are numerous. |

Within the last few days after several cool rainy days of about 1.2 inches of precipitation, greatly accelerated growth of many native plants has occurred. For example, skunk cabbage flowers and new leaves delayed for many weeks due to cold February and March are almost at normal growth stages. Swamp maples flowers also delayed have burst out last two days, particularly Saturday 4/129 with 75-degree weather. Also limited standing water, 8nusually little for this time of year has disappeared, reflecting accelrated evapotransporation in the swamp soils. |

| This week showed the swings of spring. This week ended with Saturday temps in the upper 70s for most while a few locations reached the low 80s. One week ago, that Saturday brought snow - a few locations getting 7 to 8 inches (average here was 4 1/2 inches). Keeping life interesting!
We have moved into the mid-spring season, plants are coming alive in earnest. Trees are budding: sugar maple and Norway maples have gone from plump buds to opening and flowering. Dogwood buds are getting plump as is an ornamental cherry next door. The overall look of trees throughout the area are showing the more subtle greens and reds of their foliage. Azalias are either blooming or showing flower buds coming back. Rhododendron buds are getting plump. Lovely...
Spring flowers are still popping up including the very small bulbs that seem to have planted themselves at random. Little bright blue flowers are all over the yard. Bloodroot went from nowhere to a cluster of white flowers in less than a week. Blue flag iris are shooting up their foliage, a few hostas are pushing their "spears" up - just about even with the ground yesterday. The rest will be making their spring appearance soon.
Critters are showing up regularly again. Squirrels and rabbits congregate near the bird feeder and around the yard. Woodchucks are out again. I've seen footprints, but this week one larger one ran past, a smaller one sat in the front (oh dear, another generation) watching the world go by.
It's a busy weekend, lots of extra people around, even here, some 30+ miles from Boston. With the 250th anniversary of the battles of Lexington and Concord yesterday (those towns much closer), lots of people are out and about. The Marathon runs tomorrow, tens of thousands are here in the greater Boston area for that. While the "true" Patriot's Day was yesterday, the state holiday is tomorrow (that closest Monday thing). Easter is celebrated by many today, for many, a joyous day. Happy Easter to those who celebrate! The weather is nice, the landscape is coming back to life (as are allergies for some). For the most part though, it's all good! |

Temperatures this week roller-coasted back and forth between below and above seasonal average with daily highs ranging between 43F and 75F. Daffodils, hyacinths, forsythia bushes, magnolia trees, some fruit trees and a few tulips are blooming. The grass is green and growing slowly along with a lot of lawn moss, and some lawn weeds are starting to bloom including some dandelions. Some trees and bushes are in early leaf stage, but it is striking how few trees have leafed out yet (probably due to the frequent frosty nights that we've had this month). |

| Precipitation slowed this week with the rain gauge only capturing 0.05 inches of moisture, all in the form of rain. Tuesday’s shower had a few snowflakes mixed in with the rain but hardly enough to notice. Spring appears to be slowly gaining some traction with a little more greening and slight growth to the lawn, although not enough to mow. More trees are beginning to blossom. Large trees have not leafed yet so the landscape hue is still only a subtle green. Temperatures seem to be moderating; only a brief and minor frost on Thursday morning and by Friday afternoon, temps hit the mid-70s. The low areas that host persistent puddling are much reduced of their water as are drainage ditches. Surface soils are still moist but no longer saturated. Overall, moisture doesn’t seem to be leaning one way or the other but the effects of the heavy rains from recent weeks have largely dissipated. |

| Extremely windy today. Cool in the upper 40s. My husband will still work outside chipping up all the downed branches fallen over the winter. I am working on a quilt so will stay inside. These winds are so weird. It’s only been in the past 7 or so years that we’ve had these winds that come roaring through. Guessing that it might be less trees to block them. Our Chives have another clump that decided to grow between the sidewalk and the brick border along the garden. Heat pump giving us the heat rather than the furnace. Much warmer outside the past couple days. Weird. Daffodils are blooming. Hostas are poking through the ground. Day lilies are growing all over the place. They’re more like an invasive species. Can’t get rid of them. Irises and other little unknown flowers are blooming. I didn’t plant them. Fewer birds at the feeder. Probably time to bring it down, although I still have a lot of sunflower seeds left. Thought I heard a hawk the other day. Still have Doves, Robins, Mockingbirds, Blue Jays, Cardinals, and Juncos around. Turkeys still hanging around our neighbor’s back yard. Haven’t seen geese overhead. A few squirrels and chipmunks around, especially if it’s warmer. Water supply is good. River goes up and down, depending on the rain. It flows much faster when it’s higher, then settles down once it’s around 4 feet deep. I have no information on any of the other options.
