Just like that the localized drought is over at this station. At least 4 inches of rain fell in the last 5 days. More rain is expected today and tomorrow. Area lakes and retention ponds are still below normal but everything else is wet.  View

May was another dry month as only 1.65" of rain fell, 3.10" below normal. Agricultural interests/Farmers, have for the most part, planted their seed under favorable conditions, but now could use some rain. Rivers and other water bodies are flowing low, and many ephemeral ponds are dry. Native vegetation can generally survive these periods of low precipitation, but some watering of has taken place in the urban/suburban landscapes.  View

With the recent rainfall, we are near normal on precipitation. But we are still catching up for the previous three years drought. In my reports I mention sometimes that my pond water level isn’t up to primary spill pipe. After a hard 2.28 rain yesterday that in most years would certainly fill the pond, raised it but still 8 inches below the pipe. Check the picture. It says it all. Approximately 38 acres are in this pond's watershed. The pond is 1.5 surface acres by 6 foot ave depth. This why it takes the ‘wet’ years to balance the dry. No climate change issue. Just the ebb and flow of this 100 year old pond.  View

Observed recently algae on stones in ephemeral drain ditch stagnant puddle in back yard and tested nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, alkalinity and chlorine compared to tap water today. Measurable differences in chlorine and alkalinity and distinct aroma between the two water samples. Recent wind damage in the front yard leads to increased forecast monitoring and awareness for route planning and other routine activities.  View

Finally a rainstorm on 6/3 with much needed rain.-----Camping season is in full swing as is boating season. A lot of both on the roads traveling to their destinations as well as ATVs.-----Grass is a rich green and trees and bushes filled with leaves and flowering plants doing well-----Fire smoke has been of issue in this past week from fires in Canada but for most people has not been a huge issue here. Only a few days since the smoke started has it been denser. Most carry on with daily activities. Other than the fire smoke, a typical late spring.  View
